Hold Fast

This message from Joshua 23 challenges us to examine the true nature of loyalty and faithfulness in our relationship with God. We often hear that communication is the key to lasting relationships, but we discover here that the real foundation is loyalty—a commitment that endures through trials and temptations. Joshua, at the end of his life, gathers all of Israel to remind them of God's faithfulness and to call them to hold fast to the Lord. The Hebrew word used for 'loyal' is the same word found in Genesis 2:24, describing how a man 'bonds' or 'cleaves' to his wife. This isn't about achieving perfection—if that were possible, there would be no need for the sacrificial system. Instead, it's about clinging to God with the same devotion a husband and wife should have for each other. We're called to hold fast to three essential truths: who God is (His unchanging character), what God has done (His past provisions and victories), and what God has said (His promises and commands). The challenge is that God is faithful to fulfill both His blessings and His warnings. We can't cherry-pick the comfortable promises while ignoring the harder truths. This message invites us to anchor ourselves in God's identity, to remember His works in our lives, and to immerse ourselves in His Word so deeply that it transforms our hearts and guards us from turning to the right or the left.
